The Falkirk Wheel

The Falkirk Wheel is one of Scotland’s most impressive modern engineering marvels — a rotating boat lift that connects the Forth & Clyde Canal with the Union Canal. Opened in 2002 as part of the Millennium Link Project, the Falkirk Wheel replaced a series of 11 locks that once took boats nearly a full day to navigate. Today, the elegant, energy-efficient mechanism lifts boats smoothly between the two canals in a single, graceful rotation that takes just 5 minutes — a sight that continues to captivate engineers, families, and travellers from around the world.

Visitors can take a boat trip on the Wheel, experiencing the rotation firsthand and gliding high above the surrounding landscape before connecting to the elevated canal.
