Deanston Distillery is a historic former cotton mill near Doune, offering traditional whisky-making tours, tastings, and sustainable craft production in a beautiful riverside setting.
Located on the banks of the River Teith near Doune in Stirlingshire, Deanston Distillery is one of Scotland’s most distinctive whisky distilleries — known for its craftsmanship, community roots, and beautifully converted industrial setting. Once a 19th-century cotton mill, the building was transformed into a whisky distillery in 1966, preserving much of its original character while becoming one of the most sustainable and traditional distilleries in the country.
Visitors can explore the unique production process behind Deanston’s highly regarded single malts, which are crafted using local barley, traditional open-top mash tuns, and long fermentation. The distillery is famous for its use of old-fashioned techniques and its reliance on pure water from the River Teith — as well as for generating its own renewable power, making it one of Scotland’s few self-sufficient distilleries.
Guided tours take guests through historic mill rooms, atmospheric warehouses, and the stillhouse, where the warm scent of malt fills the air. Each visit includes a whisky tasting, allowing guests to sample Deanston’s signature expressions, known for their honeyed sweetness, creamy texture, and soft, citrus-forward notes. The on-site shop offers exclusive bottlings, while the cosy café serves hearty local dishes and fresh baking.
With its blend of heritage, craftsmanship, and sustainable methods, Deanston Distillery offers a memorable and authentic whisky experience in a beautiful rural setting — perfect for whisky fans, history lovers, and travellers exploring the Stirling and Trossachs region.
